The Courtyards, Adamstown

Adamstown District Centre
Client: Castlethorn Construction
Area: 22,591 sq.m
Date: Current (2006 - ongoing)
Budget: €27 million

Based on contemporary European town centres rather than enclosed malls, Adamstown District Centre has social and environmental sustainability at its core. Working alongside many of Ireland’s preeminent architectural practices; Henry J. Lyons & Partners (Architects) have been engaged to design a portion of the new District Centre at Adamstown. The plot is situated at the Northwest corner of the district centre lands and has prominent frontage to the public square to be known as West Place.

Within the scheme, a seven screen cinema is camouflaged by the residential and commercial activities at street level and above by the introduction of gated residential entry courtyards at street level. These courtyards form the transitional space between public and semi private worlds. The residential entrances are accessed from these outdoor vestibules and are marked at intervals along the street by glazed stair-cores.
